Frequently Asked Questions - Acupuncture

Please reach us at info@refineacupuncture.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Acupuncture is a traditional medicine technique that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to promote balance, enhance the body’s natural healing abilities, and alleviate pain.

Acupuncture has numerous benefits, including pain relief, stress reduction, improved sleep, increased energy, and supporting immune system function.

Acupuncture can help with a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Chronic pain (back, neck, knee, etc.)
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Digestive issues (IBS, bloating, constipation)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Menstrual issues and fertility support
  • Allergies and respiratory issues

When choosing an acupuncturist, it is important to look for someone who is board-certified and licensed in acupuncture (LAc). This means that you will be receiving acupuncture from a practitioner who has completed at least a master's degree at an accredited school, including clinical internship, and passed the required board examinations administered by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

To get the most out of your acupuncture session, we recommend the following:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing to allow easy access to acupuncture points.
  • Eat a small meal or snack an hour or two before your appointment. Avoid eating a heavy meal right before your appointment.
  • Arrive hydrated, but avoid drinking caffeine or alcohol before your treatment.
  • Let your practitioner know if you are pregnant or have any changes to your medical conditions or medications.

During an acupuncture session, you will lie down on a comfortable table while the acupuncturist inserts thin needles into specific points on your body. The needles are extremely thin, and you may only feel a slight sensation when they are inserted. Some patients report feeling a dull ache, warmth, or a slight tingling sensation during treatment - these are typically signs that the body is responding well. You will then relax for about 25-35 minutes before the needles are removed.

Everyone’s experience is unique, but many people feel deeply relaxed after their session. Some may feel energized, while others may feel slightly fatigued. These effects are typically mild and temporary. In order to help your body process the treatment, it’s important to drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous work or exercise after your session.

Frequently Asked Questions - Herbal Medicine

Please reach us at info@refineacupuncture.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

In Chinese herbal medicine, a variety of natural substances, such as plants and minerals, are combined to create formulas that can support the body’s long-term healing process and help nourish and strengthen the internal systems. A herbal medicine practitioner will recommend a custom herbal formula based on your individual health concerns and constitution. Herbal medicine and acupuncture work synergistically and can be used together to provide more comprehensive treatment.

Chinese herbal medicine can address a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Digestive issues (bloating, indigestion, nausea)
  • Hormonal imbalances (e.g., menstrual irregularities, menopause)
  • Immune system support
  • Respiratory issues (e.g., asthma, allergies, colds)
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Skin conditions (e.g., eczema, acne)
  • Emotional issues (e.g., anxiety, stress, depression)

Herbal formulas are often used to address the root causes of symptoms rather than just the symptoms themselves.

For Chinese herbal medicine, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for noticeable improvements, depending on the condition and the specific formula used. Your practitioner will work with you to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your needs and health goals.

Always let your practitioner know about any other treatments or medications you're using, so they can customize your herbal prescriptions safely.
